Jaywalking

I got caught jaywalking once. I got down from a bus and walked towards the other side of the road, not noticing the big “No Jaywalking” sign at my left.

When I got caught I was given two options. Either to pay the fine or attend a one-hour seminar about violating jaywalking regulations. I opted to pay for the fine because I didn’t want to be late for my appointment. If I didn’t have an appointment I would have attended the seminar.

I didn’t mind getting caught. It was my fault anyway for not being mindful of the signs.
However, I found myself pretty proud of that experience.
To me it was a big improvement on traffic rules implementation.

Having grown up in a place where anyone can cross the street anywhere regardless of risk to both pedestrian and vehicle driver and passengers, it was an improvement.

It meant that if the enforcers had the guts to do their work consistently, then there would really be a way to re-educate the pedestrians to walk where they are supposed to. Even if it means re-educating for years before everyone really gets used to obeying the regulations consistently. Which could lead to less traffic, less accidents, less deaths, less damages.

Thumbs up for this experience!
