Unforgiving

As a kid I had often stared at a framed cross stitched saying
hanging by our bedroom’s wall. It said “People make mistakes
that’s why pencils have erasers”. I’ve kept that saying with
me as a constant reminder of how fragile humans can be and that
I too make mistakes.

As I got older I realized that not all people’s mistakes can be
erased. There are some that are categorized as “erasable” and
there are some that are “erasable but unforgettable” and there
are some that are in permanent ink which is both “un-erasable and
unforgettable.

When it comes to material things, I think mistakes are usually
in the erasable to erasable but unforgettable range. These are
times when someone else loses or wrecks or breaks something you
own.

But how about such things as infidelity, rape or molestation?
Can these be erasable?

If someone took your picture without your knowledge, then sold it
to someone who cut off your face and placed it in a pornographic
picture then uploaded it to some website for public viewing? Is that
erasable?

What if you were an inventor who slaved over a prototype for decades. Then when you had finished it, you find out that someone else stole your invention and presented it as his own. To me this is a form of rape. Is that erasable?

I find that saying “People make mistakes that’s why pencils have erasers” could be abused by the simple fact that even deliberate actions such as those cited above may be twisted and rephrased as mistakes.

Mistakes are unintentional. Infidelity, rape and molestation are among the few acts that are not mistakes but are deliberate and planned. To be unfaithful, or commit rape or to molest someone requires conscious decision making.

There are just some things that are easy to erase and forget.
But there are also some things that aren’t.
