The Human Rights Series

A few years ago someone whom I was having a heated discussion with abruptly cut-off our conversation and used a Human Right article on me. The right to freedom of expression. As I was thinking of something to write about last week, I thought of that conversation and said to myself that if I wrote about it here, it would just be having the same content as almost anything else that talks about it. That we have the right to say what we want.

So this week, I thought that maybe I was missing something. That maybe I could right about it but in a different way. So I dug up one of those books I bought a few years ago to read and alleviate myself from boredom. Because as a stay-at-home mom who has a diploma, if I let my mind get used to the routine of doing household chores, taking care of my family and watching TV during my free time, without reading anything new that would keep my neurons alive and kicking, then I knew my mind’s capability would turn from above average to below average. And I found what I was looking for.

The articles about Human Rights appropriately given the heading “Appendix A”.

As an appendix, it should be treated as an appendage of our daily life. It should be how we live on a daily basis.

But not everyone knows what Human Rights is all about. Neither do I because not all that is written there are words that are easy to understand and unambiguous.

So I thought of adding a new series here besides the Coordinated Moves Series. And I’m naming it the “Human Rights Series”. How I am going to write about them is something I have yet to figure.

But one thing I know for sure is, these articles on Human Rights are taught in school but are not always fully understood. Maybe it’s in the way it is taught. Maybe it’s the wording that makes it difficult for the common folk to understand. Maybe those who teach it do not have enough knowledge about it enough to explain them extensively. And maybe people don’t really care much about them unless it’s something they can use to complain about.

Yet what I know for sure is that these articles were written and are being implemented to separate man from animals by making them civilized enough to follow and conform to a universal set of rules that should be a source of control of whatever it is that man is capable of doing to cause disruption of order and peace.

But such an effort won’t work if the people they are supposed to protect do not fully understand them.

Maybe they should change the way it is taught. Maybe the wording can be simplified in textbooks using annotations, similar to those easy-to-read books that explain complex literary works, so that it isn’t anymore difficult for the common folk to understand. Maybe those who teach it should be trained or given additional materials or comprehensive evaluations so they would have enough knowledge about it enough to explain them extensively. And maybe people can be taught to care about them by telling them that it’s something they can use to complain about.

My first entry for the series is in the next post.
